The Meaning Of Life

This is a big day.  Today I, Parrot, am announcing that I have discovered the meaning of life.

Perhaps you're skeptical, but I assure you it's true.  I wrote a program to consult Google, the source of all knowledge.  Using a dictionary of about 260,000 English words and sorting out small inapplicable words like "if", "and", "but" etc..., I had the program look up each word's "Googleshare" value to "meaning of life".

If you don't know what a "Googleshare" is, I'll explain what that is in a bit. Right now I know you just want to know what my results were.  The word with the highest googleshare of "meaning of life" is:

People - 84.09% Googleshare

The great oracle of Google remains silent on how we're supposed to interpret this result.  Perhaps the meaning of life is just to get along with other people.  Or perhaps this indicates that our close relationships with family and friends are what make up the meaning of life.  Or maybe the meaning of life is just about procreating, making new people.

Whatever the case, these were the top 10 results:

people - 84.09%
time - 80.09%
world - 76.20%
now - 74.61%
love - 66.45%
man - 61.37%
today - 58.81%
music - 56.95%
years - 56.06%
book - 53.77%

So, what is a Googleshare value?  It breaks down to this:  You do a Google search for a word or a term, then you record how many results you get.  Then you do a Google search for your original word or term, and add in a new word or term in addition.

The results tell you how many of the pages from the original search also contain the new term.  In this case, 84.09% of all websites that mention "meaning of life" also mention the word "people".

Since the web is always changing, chances are that if the experiment were repeated I would get slightly different results.  But the general order of the words should remain consistent.

So there you have it.  The meaning of life is people.  Make of that what you will.  And be nifty!
