The reviews for The Nifty Files from humor-blogs.com are in! Apparently, the site came off fairly well. You can see the review here.

Apparently the website has it's detractors though... (may I get a collective "BOOOO!!!" towards them from everybody reading this?). Because I crave attention and feel a compulsion to have the last word even if the reviewers are no longer paying attention, I posted a quick response on the review blog and will repeat myself in more detail here.

Yes, it's true - I have too much time on my hands. How else do you explain this website?

In terms of design, some people liked it and some people didn't. I thought about going all out and creating a spiffy design here, but I figured that simpler was better. Most blogs I read have a pretty simple layout and design. In my opinion these kinds of blogs should be more about the content.

My only concern was making sure that the colours weren't too garish - I hate visiting websites where a mere glance can hurt your eyes. But other than that, what you see is what you get. I guess you either like it or you don't.

One reviewer said the following:

Design is good and easy to navigate. Don't like the turkey pic in the logo though, kinda low rent.

Okay, I can't take this lying down! That's a chicken, not a turkey you dumbass!! It's from the very first categorized entry I made on the blog. (click HERE to view)

I don't mind the "low rent" crack - but mistaking chickens for turkeys really gets my goat!!

Other reviewers had the gall to complain about my lack of originality. I would like to address those:

If I'm mistaken, my apologies; but as I've seen so many of the posts 'everywhere' I'm rather certain I am correct in my beliefs of recycling -- and improperly at that.

I'm sorry, I cannot accept your apologies right now. Perhaps I will in time, when the hurt goes away...

As I've said before, this website is a collection of things that I find nifty. Many of them are things that I've found online. Others are submitted to me by the content creators. And quite a lot of the entries here are original content that I've created or archived myself.

Check out my original content here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here ....

That brings me up to the end of August 2007... not even a quarter of the way through all the entries.

Another reviewer seemed to be accusing me of plagiarism:

It seems that despite putting their own website url on the images, the content is not their own and they don't credit where they found it. That's even worse than a pet peeve -- it's a HUGE No-no. I respect blogs with originality more.

I always credit the original source whenever I can. Especially when I receive submissions from the content creator I specifically name them in the entry heading.

In the case of newspaper headlines, I consider those to be in the public domain. I'll give credit to any person who finds one for me, but it would be silly to track down the journalist who wrote it just for my little blog here.

Some images are so pervasive throughout the Internet that I just can't locate the original source. I'll use those images, but I in no way take credit for them.

I put "theniftyfiles.com" on whatever images I can so that if people hotlink to them, I can at least get some advertisement out of the deal. I don't do it with all of the images - I try my best to figure out which ones I can edit fairly.

If I have EVER given credit to the wrong person for any content, or in other ways inadvertently violated intellectual property rights, I encourage anybody reading this blog to contact me and set things straight. I take these kinds of things very seriously.

Okay, serious talk over. Now for the rest of the review comments:

Let's just say it ain't just a clever title. I don't like being constantly ordered by EVERY post to "be nifty". I am not nifty. Will not nift. Have never nifted. I don't even know what 'be nifty' means, and I just had a hard time getting past it.

This is just sad! You've never nifted? I do nothing but nift all day long! You're really missing out, you poor, niftless soul!!

I think this blogger has a clearly "cute" sense of humor, too bad he/she feels the need to tell me why the various pics/videos are so darn hilarious in a way that says "I want you to laugh for the exact same reason I am. Also, I think you might not be smart enough to figure out what's going on unless I tell you. Here's hoping I get a job writing for The Family Guy, because they constantly over-expalain jokes, too." (This, in my mind, is what separates true funny from so-so.)

I guess this guy expects me to just post the pics and videos and keep quiet about them. Sorry, but I set this site up as a blog, not merely a list of funny pictures and videos for you to scroll through.

But that doesn't really bother me much. I'm more concerned at the obvious lack of taste in trashing one of the best shows on television! How dare you speak ill of The Family Guy sir?!? HOW DARE YOU!!!

Pointing Evil Monkey

There were a few other negative comments regarding my style. No complaints from me about those - they may very possibly be right on the mark there! Nevertheless I will continue posting entries in my current style like the dumbass that I am. Your criticisms are noted, processed, and discarded :p

One reviewer hated my post where I spoke directly to the reviewers. I just want to say that I make no apologies for it. When I'm reviewing other blogs I appreciate it when they put an effort into directing my attention to some of their favourite entries from the past to help me get a feel for things. If it's not to this reviewers tastes, I'll take the deducted points.

There were plenty of good comments, my thanks for all of them. I liked this one in particular:

Yay! Short funny posts. Good eye for funny bits off the web. You can come and go and not need to learn this guy's (or gal's) life story (or sex).

High praise indeed! I androgynously thank you, my friend!

Be Nifty!
